W01D2 – Utilities – who needs utilities….. ??

Ok everything went ok yesterday so I decided to go to work, leaving the builders to continue on their merry way.  Builders arrive 7:30 and plug in their power transformer – PING!!  that blows the RCD and the electricity goes off.  Should have took this as an omen and stayed at home, but instead, reset the RCD and went off to work.

When I got home builders inform me that they have damaged a ceramic gas pipe and could I “contact the gas board to come out to check”.

After going into the house to phone from the land line I notice that the phone line is also very much dead.  Not a tone at all. So off i go checking the house to see if the other phones are dead, and if the main line is plugged in. All seemed to be in order so I head outside….  Builders have cut through the phone cable at the side of the house when bringing the rubble from the rear of the house. Ahh well – accidents happen and to be fair the builders would not have seen this.

So onto Virgin to call an engineer to fix. cant come out until Thursday and could be chargeable – just the words you want to hear….  Ok Phone being sorted – Next…

Call the gas board and they tell me I have to fill in a form to divert the supply and then wait 2-6 weeks for someone to come out and assess and process it.  Called back later and spoke to another lady who said she would send out someone to check the pipes as there may be a possibility of a gas leak and they wanted to check it out.  The team came out with their gas sniffers and upon investigation, they say was not gas pipe, but electricity cable..

So Western Power Distribution to call next… they came out and was absolutely brilliant. The person investigated source and location of cables – checked them over and gave us an idea of where the cables ran, what we could do for the build, he even brought us some trunking to encase the wires in for our build.

Builders gone home – Gas, Leccy and Phone people all sorted – time to relax.  However, i also notice that there was holes in the pipes for drainage and brick surround for kitchen drain was gone also.  Hmmmmmm…
